Yaupi hydropower plant

Peru / Hydropower / Power plant

Of Statkraft’s hydropower plants in Peru, the Yaupi hydropower plant has the second highest power generation. The plant is located in the Llaupi village in the Junin region, at 1,328 metres above sea level, and takes in part of the water from the Paucartambo river.

  • 863.6 GWh
    Annual production

The Yaupi hydropower plant takes in water turbined by the Yuncán hydropower plant, owned by company Engie, upstream of Yaupi. The water is then conveyed to the valve chamber of the Yaupi hydropower plant. This supplies the five generation units in the powerhouse with water. The Yuncán intake and the reservoirs for daily regulation are located in the Pasco region.

The Yaupi hydropower plant has been operational since 1957 and the annual energy production is about 864 GWh, enough to power approximately 560,000 homes.

Together with villagers and local institutions, Statkraft Peru implemented a project for improving coffee cultivation competences.  We have also implemented initiatives for the improvement of agricultural, forestation and educational competence. We are involved in joint efforts with the Government to launch educational campaigns on water-related issues, quality education and health among other things. We have also worked with projects that promote women’s empowerment and environmental education. Additionally, environmental controls are in place as part of the environmental monitoring program and solid waste integral management.
